Evolution of Electronics

During class, we viewed a movie called The Social Network via amazon prime video. Back in the 80's or 90's, we could never have imagined "streaming" movies and music through a shared system connected to wifi. It was not a concept until late 1999 when Napster was created. Napster was the first music file-sharing system. It caught fire quickly due to the nature of it being free and fast, unlike anything we have had before. This, along with LimeWire where everything was free to download instead of having to pay $1.99-$4.99 now, through Apple or other sources. I was never able to use those outlets since I was too young, and by the time I reached the age old enough to stream music the iPod was created, circa 2001.

LimeWire had millions using its data daily, free of charge, which upset thousands of artists and in turn the creators made little to no money. LimeWire was stealing trillions of dollars from artists and music industries due to free downloads, also known as copyright infringement. LimeWire went under watch for about 5 years starting in 2006, until actions took place in New York City where courts ruled in favor of record labels and The Recording Industry Association of America. LimeWire officially shut down for good in 2010.

When LimeWire shut down, people did not want to stop file sharing and streaming music, so they created a new, legal, way to do it. People created SoundCloud, Spotify, Apple Music, and many more in order to listen freely and not having to purchase each song as they went. These platforms now allow you to pay a monthly subscription and listen to as many songs, movies, television shows, and podcasts you could ever dream of. Along with being able to stream what they wanted to, people can also upload and create what they want to as well. I could potentially write a song and upload it to iTunes or SoundCloud right now. I may not make any money off of it, but the ease of it is there. The world we live in today is drastically different from the world we lived in 20 years ago, and the world will be drastically different 20 years from now too.
